Information contained in one of Stolpe’s notebooks indicates that this is the Kalihi valley on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The stones photographed are Hapu‘u and Kaleihauola, female deities associated with travelling along the larger Nu‘uanu Valley, within which the Kalihi valley is located. It was also a site where new-born infant’s navel cords were buried, an act that was understood to bring protection to the child. 2019-03-07.
