The Museum is a non-profiting making permanent Institution in the service of the people of Botswana and their cultures. It acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits material culture on the people of Botswana for purposes of study, education and cultural development. Under the National Museum there is the Art Gallery which collects and exhibits visual arts and artistic documentation of Botswana. Archaeology division has the role of preserving and managing all monuments, relics and antiquities, and Ethnology division which collects artefacts of ethnological and historical significance to the people of Botswana and conducts oral interviews for documentation. The Museum has an educational division which runs a mobile museum service intended to take the museum to the people. There is also Natural Historic division which endeavours to accumulate Natural History collections including live specimen, and supporting divisions like Graphic and Design, and a supporting library.
