0022 Vachsei, warch II 19538, we ere now resdy with the caves after having completed the survey also of the very interesting cave in Fort des Sylphes. It is veyy inportant because or the abundance end interesting mode of occurence of the Consolidated shell sediment ån which we have found quite a number of finds. Human teeth, horn implements and some fragments of pottery. Ihe erosion and nearly total removel of the shell sediment leaving only narrow shelves of the consolidated parts will be well shown by my map and xx sections on the scal 1i:200. Une or the several riddles of the shell mound culture has been solved with a most estounding result. Ihe mysterious " Coquille des urottes " is a fresh water shell living is small streams or the larger islands. vy men first found it in numbers in the northern part or Ile de la table, and the following day I found it in two small streamws leading down to Fort des Sylphes. It is certainly dirficult to imagine the nature or thés culture, the main feature of which is the accumulation in caves on sea islands of hundreds of cubic meters oi principally of this gastråpod which occurs as far as we have found in no large quantity in distant streams. As the sea-shore is, between high and low water mark, abounding with eatable shells, is is neariy inconceivabie that these shells were collected as foodsturf. fö An instance within My OWD personai ooservavion Will illaustrate hos queer tha situation is. In the centre or ile de la rable is a village fra-ban situated two kilometers [rom Fort des Sylphes where we were anchored during the survey or the Grotte des SOPRER

One dey I went up to the village and found there at every house big shell aousds, quite modern, and eonsisting of litorsr sca shells collected by tur villegers on the sköre of Port des Sylphes just under the Cuve, But on the way up tv the village you will have to collect the "Cave shells" in the gall st: Cd y9a bass, Therc they live these "Hystery shells", but so unnoticed by present day man that the villagers told Miss Dorf who passed three days in the village for her artist work and who made upon my behelf inquiries when showing specimens froa the Cave: "Those shells Cane from the depths of the big sea and were eaten by very big people who lived in caves." 80 entirely is the provenance of these shells lost sight of that the village people attribute tnea to the deep sea, still they step over the stream containing them every day when they 4 down to the séa shore to collset sarine shells for food, Actually, the problen is still more conplicate, as the subfossil shells in the Grotte des Sylphes are not the sana - variety as the nearly smzooth and by decease distorted individuals living in tlie strean near inland, The subfossil shell isa splendid variety free from signs of decease and more strongly striated than the living shells collected by me, In the Grotte des Sylphes there is hardly any marine shells at all in the shell bed but a very large Helieia side by side with the -comion one, But there are bones of various marmals, Were those the food of the people and were the freshwater shells

0034 and the giant Helicids collected for sone industriel aim? I hope that the zoological exanination of the large shell material, both dried, in alechol and in formol, will present a RÅ to - these questions, A very interesting discovery has been made during the last weeks when working in the caves, namely the proof that the present dey caves are only saall and partial reopenings of very old and much larger caves which are as a rule entirely filled with cave breccia, yellow brown in color and uöre or less stratified. Unfortunately I never found any fössils in the cave breccia but frox physiogrephic considerations it is evident that the old cave generation is ixxsensely mach older than the present one, During the extensive cruises anong these islande I have devoted some attention to the erosion phenomena leading up to : the formation of the very singular topogcraphy of the Ilots de calcairs and think that I will be able to write a fairly full life history of these islands, When I &r back ån Hanoi I will present to you & final report on the töpographie work carried out by me accocpanied by phot and by sy map of Grotte du ciseau on the scale 1:500 and of Grotte des Sylphes on 1:200, probably also a map of the Danh Do La site, But considering that I have to be back in Stockhola about the first of June, I will not be able to undertake the

; 009 4 study and description of the extensive material we will bring to your musewa, I hope that Mr Tran who has very ably conducted the actual excavation will ba able to participate but feel that it would be of greeteet advantage if we could persuade Mlle Colani to take this work in her most sble hands, Please give my deepest respect to this most admired colleague and ask her kindly to take an interest in our material, In this commection I have to make you a proposal, When we started oat from Hanoi yoa very kindly seid that you were willing to pay us a visit provided we found something spectacular, The Caves mey be worth seeing es a kind of spectacular sites, Denh Do La, certainly the richest site, is merely a piece of level land. But I believe that there will arise a lot of discussion arouad these finds, the two generations of Caves, the very strange Way how the tslan5 Wer: fomsed; & process naver studied before 1g any part of the globe, the shell mounds and t Partly unsolved, For this reason I would highly treasure the r series of problens- privilege of explained for the Direeteur de 1'8cole my observa- tions and I wonder whether you would like to arrange so that you end Mlle Colani could cous over here togetuer, föaen & trip would take you four days inelading going to Vachai and turning from tlere to Hunol, Progran: ITst day: By motoreer from Hinoi to Vachui, Finel errangescnts oc on board "Le fTouristet, with MN.
