When I turned 24 I was a student in Amsterdam. The night before I followed my two gay friends to a squatter place in Spuistraat. Every Wednesday they had an LGBT night and usually some kind of performance was going on. That night there was a lip singing competition. One of the regulars of the bar also had his birthday, so one of the contestants competed with the song “Happy Birthday” by Jeffree Star. The song was for someone else but my friends and I connected it to my birthday. We all hugged and held each other close. We had spent an amazing year together that was coming to an end and we knew it. A month later we would all three return to our countries. The actual day of my birthday we had the song play in repeat almost the whole day. Amsterdam had worked its magic, we have gone from strangers, to roommates by chance in a student house, and finally to best friends.Stäng
