Vid ankomst till Sverige vilade mumien fortfarande i sina egna människoformade kistor, två stycken inuti varandra. Den var redan då delvis uppackad eller uppfläkt; någon hade skurit upp linnet runt ansiktet och tagit sig igenom flera lager tyg, framför allt över bröstet och buken. Höger arm hade också lindats upp till viss del, men den vänstra hade lämnats i fred. Det ser ut att vara gjort i stor hast, kanske av en gravplundrare som letade efter amuletter. Mumiens avtäckta ansikte, färgat mörkt av balsamerarnas kåda och oljor och med ögon av ben och sten, har sedan slutet av 1800-talet blickat upp på besökare, först på Nationalmuseum, senare på Egyptiska museet och Medelhavsmuseet. Under en period förvarades mumien i Egyptiska museets magasin vid Järntorget i Stockholm, där den drabbades av en vattenskada, men kroppen är ändå anmärkningsvärt välbevarad. Enligt texterna på kistorna är detta de mumifierade kvarlevorna av prästen Bakenren. Samma namn står skrivet på några av linnebindorna, så i det här fallet kan man verkligen vara säker på att det är rätt man som ligger i kistan. Andra delar av samme mans gravutrustning har, som i så många fall, hamnat i andra länder. Bakenren har till exempel en ushebti-låda i Leiden. Bakenrens mumie har röntgats flera gånger, med planröntgen 1960 och med CT 1981, 2003 och 2013. Tolkningarna av resultaten har förändrats med allt bättre bilder och möjligheterna att jämföra dem med allt fler röntgade mumier. Skelett och leder antyder att Bakenren var omkring trettio till fyrtio, möjligen upp till femtio år gammal när han dog. Det kan tyckas ungt med våra mått mätt, men i det forna Egypten var femtio en ansenlig ålder. Bakenren led då av lokal artros i ryggraden, främst i övre delen mellan första och andra halskotan. I samband med de första undersökningarna kändes mumiens ben brutna, men CT-bilderna från 2013 visar hela, starka ben utan tecken på frakturer. Röntgenbilderna avslöjar en viss förskjutning av atlaskotan, en ganska vanlig mumifieringsskada. Bakenren var inte lång, omkring 162 centimeter, men rejäla muskelfästen visar att han var kraftigt byggd. Han hade ett normalt bett och friska bihålor. Som så många egyptier hade han emellertid kraftigt nötta tänder, på några tänder ända ner till pulpan, och flera allvarliga infektioner i tänder och käkar. Mumien saknar flera tänder. Åtminstone en, tydligt synlig på röntgenbilderna från 1960, har lossnat och försvunnit i modern tid. Den sammantagna bilden är den av en stark och kraftig, men ålderstigen, man med trött rygg och ständig tandvärk. Bakenren mumifierades med armarna längs sidorna. Händerna vilar på låren, med handflatorna mot lårens framsidor. Benen har lagts raklånga med fötterna sammanförda. Vänster fot måste ha skadats i transporten från Malta eller annan senare hantering och bitar av flera tår saknas. Inälvorna har tagits ut genom ett sedvanligt snitt i vänster sida av buken. Snittet har sedan täckts över med en tygbit som antagligen hölls på plats av kåda, som anas som en mörkare skugga på CT-bilderna. Möjligen hade balsamerarna också lagt en fyrkantig plakett i hårdare material över snittet, men den har senare halkat ner. Idag är snittet delvis synligt på röntgenbilderna under en amulett föreställande en av de fyra Horussönerna. De övriga tre Horussönerna ligger prydligt utplacerade över buken. När balsamerarna hade avlägsnat de inre organen fyllde de kroppen med ett material som på röntgen framstår som en homogen och finkornig massa. Genom ett hål i buken, gjort i modern tid, har en del av detta fyllningsmaterial sipprat ut och visat sig vara väldigt fint sågspån. I fyllnadsmassan kan man på röntgenbilderna ana några tätare men otydliga områden, möjligen amuletter, i närheten av hjärtat. Avlägsnandet av Bakenrens hjärna var uppenbarligen problematiskt för balsamerarna. De hade som brukligt stuckit in ett vasst redskap genom näsan och gjort ett snyggt litet hål i etmoidbenet. Septum, mellanväggen mellan näsborrarna, är något förskjuten åt vänster, vilket tyder på att de gick in genom höger näsborre. Så långt hade allt gått väl. Men i arbetet med att mosa sönder och dra ut hjärnan, gick någonting fel. Den pinne som balsamerarna använde gick av och ramlade in i kraniet, där den ligger kvar, tydligt synlig på de senaste CT-bilderna. Det fanns inget sätt att få ut den och då gav balsamerarna upp. Resten av hjärnan ligger också kvar och anas som en oregelbunden pöl i Bakenrens bakhuvud. Den som bröt av pinnen måste ha tagit i ordentligt, vilket också antyds av en postmortal skada på Bakenrens käke. I övrigt är huvudet snyggt och omsorgsfullt balsamerat. De hoptorkade ögonen ligger kvar, men ögonhålorna har fyllts med tyg. Ovanpå denna packning placerade balsamerarna dessutom ett par konstgjorda ögon i mer beständigt material, troligen ben.
