For most Egyptians, life centred around their family and village. One of the best preserved villages is located near to the Valley of the Kings at Western Thebes. This village was the home of the tomb builders and their families. Today, the place is called Deir el-Medina and the ruins of the villagers’ homes, tombs and shrines can still be seen here. Archaeologists have found thousands of texts in and around the village, most of which are receipts, reports, letters and poetry written on small pieces of stones. Together, they provide a unique insight into life in an ancient Egyptian village.
