Earthenware in the form of a llama head from the Lambayeque region in northern Peru. In the Andean world the llama had unique historical significance that corresponded with civilizations ' scale and prosperity. Llamas and alpacas were domesticated in the Andes for 7000 and 5000 years ago and have since had a great importance for human survival. They are indigenous of the highlands but spread down to both the coastal areas and rain forest belts. In addition to their great religious significance both lama and alpaca provided the population with food, clothing and fuel. The lama was also the main means of transport in the extensive network of roads that crisscrossed the Inca empire and they were loaded with everything from water to building supplies. When the Spanish conquerors arrived, there were about 10-50 million llamas and alpacas. Within a century in 80% of the population and 90% of llama and alpacas had been wiped out.
