Kolam mask depicting the drummer, Anabera Kolama or Panikkale (Sin.).
Context
This character appears in the episode of the drummer and his family (see Preface). This mask depicts a character occupying the second place in the family. This mask is, at times, also used as the mask of Sakra, god of gods, in the guise of an old man, where venerable age is indicated by the colour of the face and the lengthy wrinkles.
Material
Wood, Vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica).
Iconography
The folds of the turban, the lengthy wrinkles, extending on the forehead and the cheeks, and the inlaid eye sockets indicate the age of this character. The face is reddish brown. The chin is projected.
Comments on the Umaluff Catalogue
The transliteration ¿Dantoberre kolam¿ is incorrect. Phonetically it should be anabera kolam.
