A timeline of ceramics
Pots of fired clay were used for cooking and storing food. Pots with food were also put in graves in the hope that the deceased may benefit from them in the afterlife.
The upper display cases feature Predynastic ceramics from various periods and locations.
One of the first major archaeological sites was Naqada in Upper Egypt where the ceramics found were of exceptionally high quality. Early archaeologists used ceramic vessels to create a relative chronology and thus, divided the Predynastic period into three phases,. Naqada I, II and III. Based on ceramics, they were able to date s archaeological sites and in relation to each other.
The ceramic vessels found in the Nile Delta were initially considerably bulkier and simpler than the thin-walled ceramics of Naqada. Archaeological excavations have shown that ceramics from the Upper Egypt region spread to the Nile Delta where it eventually replaced the local craftsmanship.

Kärl i bränd lera användes för matlagning och förvaring. Krukor med mat lades också ned i gravar, i förhoppningen att den döde skulle ha nytta av dem i ett liv efter detta.
I de övre montrarna visas fördynastisk keramik från olika tider och platser.
En av de första stora arkeologiska fyndorterna var Naqada i Övre Egypten, där keramiken var av mycket hög kvalitet. Tidiga arkeologer använde keramiken för att skapa en relativ kronologi. De delade in den fördynastiska tiden i faserna Naqada I, II och III. Med hjälp av keramiken kunde de datera fyndorter och föremål i förhållande till varandra.
Keramiken i Deltat var ursprungligen betydligt grövre och enklare än de tunnväggiga Naqada-kärlen. Arkeologiska utgrävningar har visat hur keramiken från Övre Egypten spreds till Deltat, där den till slut helt ersatte det lokala hantverket.
