Sigillplattan och handtaget är gjutna separat och det djurformade handtaget är fastsatt uppe på bottenplattan. Djuret, troligtvis ett lejon, sitter ner och har en pärla fastsatt på bröstet. Kroppen och ansiktsdragen är hårt stiliserade. Ett stort hål som troligtvis varit till för att trä sigillet på ett snöre är borrat genom huvudet. Legenden i relief består av fyra tecken: 金氏之寶 som betyder “Sigill tillhörande familjen Gim [Kim]”Ursprunget till de koreanska sigillen hittar man i Kina, där man vet att sigill har används åtminstone sedan Handynastin (206 f.Kr – 220 e.Kr). De första koreanska sigillen är från omkring trehundratalet före vår tidräkning. (De tre kungarikenas tid 57 f.Kr – 668 e.Kr). Troligtvis började sigill då användas för att intyga och bestyrka både officiella och personliga dokument, samt målningar och kalligrafier.

Det fanns två sorters sigill: officiella sigill som användes av kungar, feodalherrar och statliga verk, samt privata sigill med namn, smeknamn och citat från dikter eller klassiker och som användes ungefär som en signatur. Under Goryeo (918-1392) upprättades och drevs tre efter varandra följande statliga verk med ansvar för officiella sigill. Det finns inga nu kända officiella sigill som överlevt från Goryeo, eftersom den nya statsstyrelsen gjorde sig av med dem när Joseondynastin trädde till makten under det sena trettonhundratalet. Det finns däremot gott om privata sigill från Goryeo. De är vanligtvis i brons och består av en bottenplatta med en graverad stämpelyta och ett handtag som antingen är enkelt eller utsmyckat och som gjorde det möjligt att fästa sigillet vid bältet. Legenderna innefattar kinesiska tecken, men även symboler och geometriska figurer, och är i många fall otydbara. Sigillens legender och dekor är ofta relaterade till ett långt liv och välgång och innefattar även buddistiska symboler. Även om inte mycket är känt om deras funktion så användes de troligtvis till att försegla kuvert och dokument.
Den koreanska sigillsamlingen på Östasiatiska museet består av 129 bronssigill och ett stensigill och speglar mångfalden och den hantverksskicklighet med vilken sigill framställdes under Goryeo. Bottenplattornas form varierar och kan vara runda, rektangulära eller åttkantiga. Handtagen består antingen av en enkel ögla på bottenplattan, en stående skiva med ett hål som användes för att fästa ett snöre vid sigillet (huvuddelen av dessa sigill är formade som en ”yeoudi” – en molnformad symbol för välgång) eller formade till avbildande figurer såsom lejon, fiskar, sköldpaddor, människor eller fåglar, även dessa med ett hål eller snörögla.

Alla legender är inte i läsbart skick men sigillen kan kategoriseras i följande grupper: personliga sigill, familjesigill, sigill med symboler och stiliserade tecken (till exempel långt liv, rikedom eller hälsa) sigill med bildlegender och sigill med legender som visar sigillets funktion (exempelvis tecknet för ”förseglat” (koreanska: bong)). I många fall är de kinesiska tecknen stiliserade med snirkliga linjer anpassade till sigillplattans form (koreanska: gucheopjeon), men även andra typer av sigillskrift användes. Det är inte mycket vi vet om tillverkningsprocessen, men vanligtvis är de mindre sigillen gjutna i ett stycke medan dess att handtagen på de större sigillen ofta är gjutna för sig och har sedan fästs på bottenplattan. Några av legenderna är formade av flera metallremsor som har lötts fast på sigillets bottenplatta.

Föremålet tillhör en samling om 130 sigill från Goryeo (918-1392) som donerats av Dr. Lars Erik Warfvinge, Halmstad.

Samlingen som består av 130 sigill och åtta andra föremål, däribland keramik från de tre kungarikenas tid (57 f.Kr–668 e.Kr) och metallföremål från Goryeo (918–1392), donerades till Östasiatiska museet 1972 av Dr Lars Erik Warfvinge (1913–1992). Warfvinge var en svensk läkare som var stationerad vid den nationella sjukvårdsinrättningen ”National Medical Center” (NMC) i Seoul mellan 1965 and 1967. NMC var ett gemensamt medicinskt projekt mellan de skandinaviska länderna, UNKRA (United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency) och den koreanska regeringen. Det svenska bidraget till NMC bestod i att Sverige fortsatte att driva Röda korsets sjukhus i Busan som varit i funktion under Koreakriget och några år efter det (1950–1958). Warfvinge byggde upp sin samling under sin tid i Korea genom inköp på den lokala marknaden, troligtvis i antikaffärer. 1996 donerade hans son, Jens Erik Warfvinge (f. 1952) ytterligare 23 föremål till den koreanska samlingen på Östasiatiska museet. Denna grupp föremål består i huvudsak av keramik samt några metallföremål från Goryeo.

The seal plate and the handle were cast separately, and the animal-shaped handle was attached on top of the bottom plate. The animal, probably a lion, is depicted in a sitting position, with a pearl attached to its chest. Body and facial features of the animal are highly stylized. A large hole was drilled through the head, which was probably intended for attaching a cord to the seal. The stamping surface is inscribed in relief with four characters: 金氏之寶, which translates as "Seal of the Gim [Kim] Family."

The origin of Korean seals can be traced back to China, where seals are known to have been in use since at least the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). The earliest Korean seals date to around the 3rd century CE (Three Kingdoms period 57 BCE – 668 CE), and it is assumed that seals started to be used from that time as a means for certifying and authenticating official and personal documents, as well as paintings and calligraphies. There were two kinds of seals: official seals used by kings, feudal lords and government offices; and private seals with names, sobriquets or excerpts from poems or classics, comparable to a personal signature. In the Goryeo Dynasty (918 – 1392), three consecutive government offices in charge of official seals were established and operated. There are no known official seals surviving from the Goryeo government because they were disposed of when the new Joseon government took over the leadership of the country in the late 14th century. However, private seals of the Goryeo period are still extant in large numbers. They are generally of bronze and consist of a bottom plate with an inscribed stamping surface and a handle that can either be simple or ornate, which allowed them to be fastened to a waist belt. Inscriptions include Chinese characters, but also symbols and geometric patterns, and are in many cases indecipherable. The inscriptions and decoration of the seals are often associated with longevity or good fortune and include Buddhist symbols. Although not much is known about their function, they were probably used for sealing envelops and documents.

The Korean seal collection of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities includes 129 bronze seals and one stone seal, reflecting the diversity and craftsmanship of Goryeo seals. The shape of the bottom plates varies from circular to rectangular, and octagonal forms. Handle shapes include simple loops on top of the bottom plate, vertical flat handles (the majority shaped in the form of a yeouidu – a cloud-shaped symbol for good fortune) with a hole for a cord and figurative handles in the shapes of lions, fishes, tortoises, humans or birds with a hole or loop for attaching a cord. Not all inscriptions are legible, but they can be categorized into personal seals, family seals, seals with symbols and stylized characters (for example longevity, wealth or health), seals with pictorial inscriptions and seals with an inscription indicating its function (for example the character for “sealed” (Korean: bong)). In many cases, the Chinese characters are written in a stylized form with meandering lines and adapted to fit the shape of the seal plate (Korean: gucheopjeon), but other types of seal script were likewise used. Not much is known about the production process of the seals, but their examination shows that, generally, smaller seals were cast in one piece, while larger seals have separately crafted handles that were attached to the bottom plate. Some of the inscriptions were fashioned out of several metal strips that were soldered onto the bottom plate of the seal.

This object belongs to a collection of 130 seals of the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) donated by Dr Lars Erik Warfvinge, Halmstad.

The collection of 130 seals as well as eight other objects, including ceramics from the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE) and metal wares from the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) were donated to the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in 1972 by Dr Lars Erik Warfvinge (1913–1992). Warfvinge, a Swedish medical doctor, was stationed at the National Medical Center (NMC) in Seoul between 1965 and 1967. The establishment of the NMC was a joint medical project between the Scandinavian countries, the UNKRA (United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency) and the Korean government. The Swedish contribution to the NMC was a continuation of the medical assistance provided by the Swedish government to Korea during and after the Korean War (1950–1953) that started with the setup and operation of the Swedish Red Cross Hospital in Busan (1950–1958). Warfvinge built his collection during the time he served in Korea by acquiring objects on the local market, probably through antique shops. In 1996, his son, Jens Erik Warfvinge (born 1952), donated another 23 objects to the Korean collections at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities. This group of objects comprises a majority of ceramics and few Goryeo metal objects.

인장의 몸체와 손잡이가 따로 주조되었고, 동물형의 손잡이는 몸체의 윗면에 부착되었다. 사자로 보이는 동물은 앉은 자세로 가슴에 구슬을 달고 있다. 동물의 몸통과 얼굴은 그 특징이 과도하게 도식화되었다. 머리에 뚫린 큰 구멍은 인수(印綬)를 달기 위한 것으로 짐작된다. 인면(印面)에는 김씨 가문의 인장임을 가리키는 김씨지보(金氏之寶)의 네 자가 양각으로 새겨져 있다.

한국의 인장은 그 기원을 중국에서 찾을 수 있는데, 이는 늦어도 한나라 (206 BCE – 220 CE) 시기부터 인장이 사용되고 있었을 만큼 중국에서의 역사가 오래기 때문이다. 한국에서 발견된 최초의 인장들은 삼국시대 (57 BCE – 668 CE)인 3세기경의 것으로, 이 시기부터 인장이 공적 및 사적 문서, 그림, 서예 작품을 보증하고 증명하는 수단으로 사용되기 시작했다. 여기에는 두 종류의 인장이 있었는데, 하나는 왕, 토지를 소유한 귀족, 관료들이 공적인 용도로 사용한 인장과 다른 하나는 이름, 호 (號), 시나 고전으로부터의 발췌를 새겨 개인의 서명과 다름 없이 사용한 사적 용도의 인장이 그것이다. 고려 시대(918 – 1392) 에는 왕부(王府)의 관인(官印)을 주관하는 관청인 부보랑(符寶郎)을 시작으로 인부랑(印符郞)을 거쳐 상서사(尙瑞司)가 설치되고 관련 업무를 관장했다. 그러나 고려시대의 관인은 현재 전하는 것이 없는데, 이는 조선왕조가 1392년에 개창하면서 구왕조의 관인을 폐기하였기 때문이다. 반면에, 고려시대의 개인용 인장들은 다수 남아 있다. 이 인장들은 대체로 청동으로 주조되었고 글자가 새겨진 인면(印面)과 손잡이(紐)로 구성되어 있는데, 손잡이는 그 형태가 간결한 것과 장식적인 것으로 다양하며 고리나 구멍을 통해 허리띠에 매어 달 수 있도록 만들어졌다. 한자 뿐만 아니라 상징과 기하문양을 새기기도 한 인문(印文)은 판독이 어려운 경우가 많으나, 주로 장수(長壽) 혹은 복(福)과 관련이 있거나 불교적인 내용을 상징하는 도상이 다수이다. 인장들의 정확한 용도에 관하여 알려진 바가 많지 않지만, 편지나 문서를 봉할 때 사용했을 것으로 짐작된다.

스웨덴 스톡홀름 소재의 동아시아박물관이 소장하고 있는 한국의 인장은 129점의 청동인장과 한 점의 돌 인장으로, 이 유물들을 통해 고려시대 인장의 다양성과 공예 기술을 살펴볼 수 있다. 몸체인 인판(印版)은 원형, 직사각형, 팔각형으로 그 형태가 다양하다. 손잡이의 형태 또한 단순한 고리로 된 것부터 대체로 여의두 모양을 하고 인수 (印綬)를 다는 구멍이 있는 납작한 판을 수직으로 세운 것, 그리고 인수를 다는 구멍이나 고리가 있는 손잡이로써 사자, 물고기, 거북이, 새 혹은 인간 형상을 본뜬 것까지 가지각색이다. 모든 인문이 판독이 가능한 것은 아니지만, 인장들은 개인용, 가문을 대표하는 것, 상징이나 장수, 부귀, 건강을 나타내는 도안화된 글자가 새겨진 것, 그림이 새겨진 것, 봉(封)자를 새겨서 용도를 명시한 것으로 분류가 가능하다. 한자를 도안화된 구불구불한 선으로 새기고 인면의 모양에 맞추어 글자 획을 여러 번 구부리는 구첩전 (九疊篆)의 서체가 주를 이루었지만, 전서(篆書)체나 다른 자체도 함께 쓰였다. 인장의 제작기법에 대해서는 알려진 바가 별로 없으나, 작은 인장들은 대개 한 덩어리로 주조한 반면 더 큰 인장들은 몸체와 손잡이를 따로 주조한 것이 유물 조사를 통해 확인된다. 인면을 별개의 금속 조각을 다듬어 납땜한 경우도 발견된다.

이 유물은 라쉬 에릭 바르빙에 박사가 기증한 130점의 고려시대 인장 중 하나이다.
1972년에 라쉬 에릭 바르빙에 박사 (1913–1992)는 130점의 인장과 더불어 삼국시대 도자기와 고려시대에 제작된 금속 재질로 된 물건 등을 포함한 여덟 점의 유물, 총 138점을 동아시아박물관에 기증했다. 바르빙에 박사는 스웨덴인 의사로 1965년에서 1967년까지 서울에 위치한 국립중앙의료원에 파견됐다. 국립중앙의료원은 스칸디나비아의 스웨덴, 덴마크, 노르웨이 3국과 국제연합한국재건단 그리고 한국 정부가 협력하여 설치 및 운영한 공공의료원이다. 스웨덴은 한국전쟁 기간 동안 그리고 그 이후에 부산에 위치한 스웨덴 적십자 야전병원을 운영한 것의 연장선상에서 국립중앙의료원에 기여한 것이었다. 바르빙에 박사는 한국에서 근무하는 동안 지역 시장, 골동품점을 통해 유물을 수집했던 것으로 추정된다. 1996년에는 그의 아들인 옌스 에릭 바르빙에가 동 박물관의 한국 유물 컬렉션에 총 23 점의 유물을 기증했으며, 여기에는 다수의 도자기와 고려시대 금속 재질의 유물이 몇 점 포함되어 있다.
