Votive caches, Votivgömma

Ordinary people were not allowed into the temples. Small chapels or shrines could instead be found at the back of the main temple, giving people a chance to approach the god. Large quantities of votive offerings presented to the god have been found in such locations.
The most common gift was statuettes that depicted the god in question. One of the most popular gods was Osiris. Generations of Egyptians have placed bronze Osiris figures in small chapels or niches, perhaps with a prayer that – like Osiris himself – they would be reborn into eternal afterlife.
Votive offerings could also be related to illness, grief or infertility. Some are directly related to various body parts, like a pair of feet. A motif commonly found on small steles shows a pair of ears, referring to the ability of the god to hear the prayer.

Vanligt folk hade inte tillträde till templets inre. I stället kunde det finnas små kapell vid templets bakvägg, där man kunde närma sig guden. På sådana platser har man hittat stora mängder votivoffer, gåvor överräckta till guden, i hopp om att denne skulle ge någonting tillbaka.
Den vanligaste gåvan var statyetter som föreställde guden i fråga. En av de populäraste gudarna var Osiris. I små kapell eller nischer lade generationer av egyptier ned Osiris-figurer i brons, kanske med en bön om att – liksom Osiris själv – få återfödas till ett evigt liv.
Votivgåvor kunde också vara kopplade till sjukdom, sorg eller barnlöshet. Vissa hör specifikt samman med olika kroppsdelar, som ett par fötter. Ett vanligt motiv på små votivstelar är ett par öron, en anspelning på gudens förmåga att höra böner.
