Nr: 202100-5075 CONDITION STATEMENT FOR LOAN/EXHIBITION LOAN/EXHIBITION TITLE OR NUMBER: Kappsäcken: Swedish Missionary OBJECT NUMBER: 1994.12.0036 OBJECT DETAILS OBJECT TYPE: Skrapinstrument NUMBER OF PARTS: 1 MATERIALS: Wood, animal skin, plant fibre, wax (?) fill material DIMENSIONS (mm): c.770 (l) x 170 (dia. at base) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: REQUIREMENTS LIGHT LEVEL: < 50 lux < 100 lux < 150 lux < 200 lux < 250 lux > 250 lux ENVIRONMENT: RH: 50 % RH Fluctuations:< 5 % per hour Temperature: 21 oC UV levels <75/lumen GENERAL CONDITION STATEMENT: Object has been on long-term display (since 2002) as part of Kappsäcken exhibition: Swedish Missonary. Object is in good condition overall with some light surface dust. Abroasion of wooden surface particularly on back of figure body and head. Area of loss from animal skin (c.70 x 30 mm). Skin appears to have been historically detached and reattached. Notched wooden component in front of animal skin is attached at one end only and is mobile. Long, longitudinal cracks in the wood along the left of the face, neck and body have been filled with what appears to be wax, likely during the working life of the object. Plant fibre band around figure neck is brittle and prone to loss. Evidence of historical wood boring insect damage at various points on back of object- some of these have been partially filled with wax (see photomicrographs). Object was mounted with support fishing wire connected at figure neck. Fishing wire removed. Surface cleaned overall using soft brush and light vacuum. MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS: HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Attached wooden piece on front of object is attached at one end only. Care when handling to avoid pressure and possible breakage of remaining plant fibre binding. Plant fibre around neck is prone to loss. Handle with care.
