Name and identification of character
A forest-dwelling hunter, Vädda.
Context
The mask is worn in two contexts: 1. As a Vädda in the story of Maname, Maname kathava (Sin.), in Kolam. 2. As Vädi Sanniya in the demon-dancing ceremony associated with the Sanni (also referred to as Daha-ata Sanniya). The mask represents bubonic plague.
Material
Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica).
Iconography
An elongated face painted in dark green. The forehead is swollen, as a consequence of the bubonic plague. A few indistinct signs are drawn on the forehead; possibly a signature. Small, loosely fitted ears, carved in the shape of leaf-cups.
