I brev hem av den 10 januari 1896 skriver Hedin:
"Yesterday I visited the village of Borazan, where those remarkable Buddhist antiquities are found, but I made practically no discoveries. On the other hand the natives come along daily with their terra-cotta figures, pots, precious stones with engraved portraits, coins, Buddha images etc. ... and I have acquired a lot of these things cheaply enough. There is an old Tartar, of Orenburg, living here, by the name of Rafikoff, and he speaks Russian fluently. He has paid me several visits, and when I called upon him he presented me with a number of these antiquities." - cit Montell 1936 nr 7.

1903.11 - Sven Hedins andra samling från den första expeditionen 1893-97 avskiljdes som en separat samling från 1902.13 beroende på dess arkeologiska innehåll. Den största delen består av små terrakotta föremål införskaffade i Khotan (Yotkan) 1896 och kommer från den period då Khotan (på kinesiska kartor: Hotien ) var ett buddhistiskt centrum av stor betydelse. Från århundradena efter Kristi födelse och fram till det muslimska erövrandet av staden och dess omland under slutet av niohundratalet stod det sydvästra hörnet av Tarimbäckenet under indiskt och indoiranskt inflytande, vilket sedan gav vika för kinesiskt och tibetanskt styre. De små terrakotta föremålen utgörs av djur (människor, apor, kameler, får, fåglar), maskaroner för att ornamentera kärl, detaljer/fragment av större eller mindre statyer, visar upp ett tydligt gandhariskt inflytande. Den gandhariska stilen utvecklades i Kashmir och kringliggande dalar under århundradena innan Kristi födelse och ger tydligt prov på det hellenistiska inflytandet över detta område. I samlingen ingår också delar till några större kärl. Liknande samlingar finns förutom i Khotan och Urumqi, i St. Petersburg, Oxford, London, Lahore, München, Bremen, Helsingfors, Seoul, Tokyo och på ytterligare några andra håll i världen. De är unika för detta område i SÖ:a Tarimbäckenet. Hedins samling är en av de äldsta vad gäller insamlingstiden och av betydande internationellt intresse. I samlingen ingår även några små buddhistiska statyetter i metall, liksom andra små föremål i metall, elfenben, sten och pärlemor.
Efter arbetet i Khotan genomkorsade Sven Hedin öknen mellan Khotan Darya och Keriya Darya varvid han upptäckte Dandan Uiliq. Från denna fyndplats finns några små formpressade buddhafigurer i gips, vilka med stor sannolikt prytt kronan till en större Buddhastaty i stuck.

1903.11 – Sven Hedin’s second collection from his first expedition 1893-97 was separated from the 1902.13 collection because of its archaeological content, to form a collection of its own. To a large extent it consists of terra-cotta objects acquired in 1896, in Khotan (Yotkan), and relate to a period in history when Khotan was an important Buddhist centre. From the early centuries of our time reckoning until the Muslim conquest of the area towards the end of the tenth century this part of the Tarim basin was under political and cultural influence from the South, from Indian and Indo-iranian sources, which then gave away for Tibetan and Chinese rule. The small terra-cotta objects of the collection consist of animals (humans, monkeys, camels, sheep, birds), molded decorations for vessels, details/fragments of statuettes, all giving evidence of a pronounced Gandharan influence. The Gandharan style developed in Kashmir and surrounding valleys during the centuries preceding our time reckoning, and give evidence to the Hellenistic influence exerted over this area. In the Hedin collection there are also fragments of a few slightly larger vessels. Similar collections are found in Khotan and Urumqi, in St. Petersburg, Oxford, London, Lahore, Munich, Bremen, Helsinki, Seoul, Tokyo, as well as in a few other places in the wo0rld. Such objects are unique for this area, and because of the early date for their acquisition they are of considerable interest. The collection also contains some small Buddhist statues cast of metal, together with a few other objects made of metal (such as coins), ivory, stone and mother of pearl.
Subsequent to his work in Khotan Sven Hedin crossed the Taklamakan desert from Khotan Darya to Keriya Darya, en route discovering Dandan Uiliq, an old deserted settlement from the Buddhist period. From this site Hedin brought just a few objects, some caste Buddhist figures in gypsum. Probably they once adorned the crown of a big statue of Buddha, in stucco.
