On the savannah, people lived as hunters and gatherers. Traces of their lives and activities can be found at what were once lakeshores and flood banks. Here, archaeologists have found stone tools from different periods and for different purposes such as axes, arrowheads, knives and scrapes. The same types of tools were used across vast areas and over long periods of time. The oldest tools were simple and crudely made hand axes, which over the course of the next few millennia were refined into much more sophisticated and specialised tools.
