represents a return to older weaving for blankets, and with native dyes and entirely native spun yarns instead of the older Bayetas and so forth. This specimen is considerably better average in technique, although not equal to the very finest. The design is entirely native and closely similar to decorations of the early period, although due to different colour range developed in native dyes, and the coarser the stitch, the effect is different. Development of the dyes from platns in the Bavajo country never went far from cochineal, indigo, and the respun European yarns were available. It was entirely cut short by the introduction of cheap commercial dyes. Under the impetus of the revival these Indians have been experimenting with practically everything that grows and every usable earth on their reservation. The result has been the development of a colour range and of a variety of soft shades which is entirely new in the history of Southwestern weaving. In this specimen the black is the wool of black sheep, in some instances intensified by a dye, but it would be dangerous to say what plant was used. The curious gray was probably derived from a bark, and here again it would be dangerous to guess the source because so many plants give variations of this colour. The purple, an entirely new shade, comes from the flower of a small plant which grows in marshy places. I could get hol of no one who had actually seen this plant, and so cannot identify it. On the whole I regard this as a particularly good specimen of a new development which is likely to become the dominant one in Navajo weaving, Price 30 dollars.
