This is a rather crude example of an ibeji or twin figure of the Yoruba. They are carved when a twin dies and are looked after by the surviving twin and his mother. See my article on Yoruba art in L´Art Nègre, Paris, 1951, for an account of the cult. ´Nago´ is only a local name for the Yoruba used by the Fon and the French. This piece should be placed under Yoruba. It was obviously bought from a carver (or in a market), but is not a tourist piece as Bolinder says. W.B.Fagg. 16.9.57.
