Nr: 202100-5075 CONDITION STATEMENT FOR LOAN/EXHIBITION LOAN/EXHIBITION TITLE OR NUMBER: Kappsäcken: Bergman OBJECT NUMBER: 1960.15.0042 OBJECT DETAILS OBJECT TYPE: Sköld; skyddsvapen NUMBER OF PARTS: 1 MATERIALS: Trä, plant fibre, earth pigment DIMENSIONS (mm): 1700 (l) x c.370 (w) x c.85 (d) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: REQUIREMENTS LIGHT LEVEL: < 50 lux < 100 lux < 150 lux < 200 lux < 250 lux > 250 lux ENVIRONMENT: RH: 50 % RH Fluctuations:< 5 % per hour Temperature: 21 oC UV levels <75/lumen GENERAL CONDITION STATEMENT: Object has been on long-term display (since 2002) as part of Kappsäcken exhibition: Bergman case. The wooden component of the object is in good condition overall. The partial remains of plant fibre ‘tassles’ can be seen at two points on the upper PR side of the object. It is likely that the shield once had plant fibre tassles located in each of the 10 drilled holes around the shield edge but these are no longer present. The reverse of the shield is intact. Three small holes on the upper surfaces most likely relate to former mounting of the object for display; the two outer holes are symmetrically placed. Mounting fishing line was removed from around the carved handle. Surface cleaned overall using non-contact air puffer and light vacuum. MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS: HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Avoid touching the pigmented surface as the pigment is not firmly bound to the surface of the shield and prone to loss.
