Nr: 202100-5075 CONDITION STATEMENT FOR LOAN/EXHIBITION LOAN/EXHIBITION TITLE OR NUMBER: Kappsäcken: Skelettsamlaren, Loan from Tekniska Museet OBJECT NUMBER: 32.392 OBJECT DETAILS OBJECT TYPE: Edison Standard Phonograph NUMBER OF PARTS: 5: Box with mechanism, lid, winding handle, horn, horn connecting component MATERIALS: Wood, Metal DIMENSIONS (mm): 275 (h) x 385 (w) x 230 (d) (packed cabinet without horn component) Horn 320 (l) x 176 (dia. at base) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: REQUIREMENTS LIGHT LEVEL: < 50 lux < 100 lux < 150 lux < 200 lux < 250 lux > 250 lux ENVIRONMENT: RH: 50 % RH Fluctuations:< 5 % per hour Temperature: 21 oC UV levels <75/lumen GENERAL CONDITION STATEMENT: Object has been on long-term display (since 2002) as part of Kappsäcken exhibition: Skelettsamlaren. Object is in good condition overall with some light surface dust. The wooden cabinet components of the device are intact with a patina consistent with age and prior use. There is some discolouration of the exterior wooden surfaces likely due to prior UV and Light exposure. This is particularly visible on the wood beneath the carrying handle. ´The top surface of the cabinet lid is darker than the rest of the wood. Drip marks on the exterior sides of the object may relate to prior surface varnish. The black paint of the exterior metal components (handle and closing clasps) is chipped in places revealing underlying metal surfaces. There are three prominent scores on the interior surface of the lid- most likely from contact with the phonograph metal components during opening and closing of the lid. The visible metal components of the phonograph appear in good condition. The chrome surface on the screw on the front PL of the device has been partially lost. The internal device mechanism is intact and free from corrosion and appears to have a liberal coating of mineral oil. Black spots on the interior wooden surface are likely mineral oil splashes from the device cogs during operation of the phonograph. The phonograph horn and connecting horn piece are in good condition and free from visible corrosion. The cone of the horn has some small dents overall. The metal horn was tied in place with fishing line to avoid accidental movement during diplay. This was removed and the horn and connecting piece were disconnected from the object for packing. Object was surface cleaned overall using soft brush and light vacuum.
