I de Vylders dagbok (15 december 1873) skriver han att han bland mycket annat köpte (bytte) en damara kvinnohuvudbonad mot "9 ounces of lead which is 7 shillings and 6 pence" (De Vylder 1998:157)

15 December 1873, Monday
In the morning I bought two Damara arrows for a piece of tobacco, and a Damara woman's hat [head-dress?] for 9 ounces of lead which is 7 shillings and 6 pence, a box of percussion caps which is 2 shillings and 6 pence, an ounce of powder which is 3 shillings, nine ounces of beads which is 1 shilling and 8 pence. I also bought a large tortoise for a piece of tobacco; a large tortoise and the tusk of a wild boar for a piece of tobacco; a Bergdamara drum, which they call 'dgaurup' for a goat costing 7 shillings and 6 pence, as well as two pieces of tobacco; two pipes called 'dgabitti', which the Bergdamara use when hunting elephants, for two pieces of tobacco; and from a Damara princess, Kahongoryba, an ostrich egg for which I gave an ounce of beads and a pancake. In de Vylder's diary (Monday 15 December 1873) he writes about purchasing (bartering) a damara head-dress in exchange for "9 ounces of lead which is 7 shillings and 6 pence" (De Vylder 1998:157).
