Some of the items in the collections of the Museum of Ethnography are on loan. They have been lent for a long period of time, for example from other museums or from foundations. Over time, some of them have become gifts. The earliest loans go back to the 19th century. Nowadays many museums are avoiding loans from private persons, for practical, economical and legal reasons. In 1933 the Nordic Museum / Nordiska Museet handed over a large collection, more than 1000 items from the Inuit culture in Greenland , on loan to the Museum of Ethnography. Those items were later incorporated in the collections of the Museum of Ethnography.
