The god most associated with ecstatic cult in the Greco-Roman world was Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility and the theatre. The frenzied state of those driven wild by Dionysus is an element in a number of myths, including those of the poet Orpheus. These myths, however, reflect a real form of ecstatic worship, well documented in ancient accounts, in which women and men would go out into the countryside at night and perform mystery rites in honour of Dionysus.
