Cup mouth; tall, narrow neck; tapering shoulder; band-like handle, sunken in the middle, from neck to shoulder; body curved below angle between shoulder and body, tapering towards base; concave disc base; conical depression in bottom centre. Light-red, Attic clay; black glaze; applied white. Interior and exterior of rim cup coated black; rim top reserved; handle exterior black; applied white on neck and most of body; one row of bars and one of rays on shoulder; black line on angle between shoulder and body; on upper body meander between black bands; below this, doubled ivy stem (leaves and berries) between lattice bands; lower body black glazed with four reserved, wet-incised, narrow lines; base top black glazed; two black bands on base edge; bottom reserved.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
