008F a DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY February goth 1926 PEKING UNION MEDICAL COLLEGE 3 | PEKING, CHINA. Dear Dr Andersson, : Thank you so much for your welcome letter of låst November whiecH reached me in- the early part of December. I am delignhted to hear of the great progress of your work in-Sweyden and the-good pröspects of support for our central Astiatiec projget., It has been work for the latter object that has occupted my whole tife- for the last six weeks, Last autumn I received definite word from Mr. Embree, director of the Division of Studies of the R.F. that he was interested in hearing of our project and wourd come to Peking tn1is spring: Then I went to Japan as a detlegate to tie Far Kastern Congress of Tropical Medicine and so lost a month of working time,- On my returda I begar to plan an artickte om tne role of central Asia in the history of man and the primates using Dr. A Grabau's fascinating discussion on the migration of geosynclines and also his palaeogeograpny. He was kind enough to consent to draft the details of the Tertiary geography on seven globes I bought and my artist has put. in the last two months on them bringing these new worlds to completion. The last will be finished next week and they make a wonderful series of FN=—= Working modeks” ; Meanwhile I have written the article"Asia and the disversal of prim te" for the teological Societies Bulletih = the whole being specially designed for Mr. .Embrees benefit and conversion) For the illustration of one part I am using some maps I have worked out myself and for the rest photographs of these globes of Dr Grabau's. Certainly they are striking illustrations and Dr Wong has arranged to have them heliotyped so they should reproduce well. I now hgar Mr.Embree is due here in about tree or four weeks time, so within six weeks or so I should have some definite idea how tie Foundatia will view the project. I am an optimist but that is because I cannot help feeling th&td it is a tremendously worth while plan.I hope I can convince Mr.Embree!l The political situation bs extreemly involved but Dr.W.H.Wong does not think that it should hinder us particularly if we plan to work west of Kansu,He says there id considerable opposition of the part of the local authorities there to arechaeologlecal work = but that west in Sinkiang this does not amount to much and we should be able to work unhindered there, The restoration of the Xansu skulls is nearly completed and we begin on the craniograms this week.I do not think I can get this report ready before the. end of this year but I shall try. We have a wreteched China Medical Association convention here next August-=September and I am sec'y to a section so that will delay work a bit, S Have you any word yet as to the specific identification of those Eocene lemuroid-insectivore types from the Yuan Chl beds? They are e extremely interesting and I am losking forward with great interest to hearing of their identification. I should think Stehlin would be particular= ly interested in them too, I am aäso anxiously awalting the publication of your work on tne Archaeology of China. Have you got the field notes of the Chuchia CWai site material in shape yet so that I could get a copy? The skulls-are ready now and I- should Ilike to be able to make gut a preliminary list of the material as I did of the others along side of your data.
