Dear Professor Karlgren. ; I have just returned from a temporary absence and found your exceedingly interesting and important "Word Families in Chinese" awalting me. Please accept my warm- est thanks. I marvel at the amount of material packed within its pages,and though thus far I have been able only to dip into it,what I have read shews me that once more you have paved a new road where only vague trails were previously known. You can scarcely know how opportune and stimulating your work is to me,for I have been working anew of late on the word families of Tibetan. This had 1ed me right up to the threshold of the problems you discuss in Chinese,and your researches add tremendously to the interest of the subject. Though approaching from the Tibetan side - and originally intenaing to deal only with Tibetan - the interlinkage with Chinese is in such a number of cases so con- vincing that even working with Anc. forms I was äriven to the conclusion that a consideration of Chinese was almost a necessi- ty. Imagine then,how delighted I am that you have now assem- blead with so high a degree of probable accuracy the word fami- 11es of the archalc language,as these bring forth ,even more strikingly,proof of the early similarlity between such families in the two languages. Your work will indeed enable similar researches in related flelds to be carried forwarå witn much greater certainty.
