Dr. Nong Wen ao, Director of the National Geological Survey of Chine, shut Ching Tal, Chuletang Road, Nanking Dear Dr. Wong, I have to thank you most sincerely for your kihd letter with regerd to our Palseontologia Sinica monographs. First I wish to tell you that our Parliament voted only half of the sum which the Academy had proposed for Hedin's scientific publica- tions. Still I understand from Hedins communications that ne will provide from other sources what will be furtter needed, so I think that we can rest quite assured thet the Palaeontologia Sinice publications of the Hedin expedition will be payed in full by arrangements made by Hedin. As to our monographs in the Pslaeontologia Sinica I am sorry that we can not provide from here funds for printing them. It is before ell in order to meet your natural wish to have these monographs as fag as possible printed in China, that I come out now to supervise the proof-reading of not less tien three monographs. For the future I hope thet we wil] be able to send as many mono= graphs as possible to be printed in China and that you will be willing

Do you not taink it possible when I now come to Nanking to take up with the Government authorities the question of paying my arrears of Jary in favour of printing the Pslaeontologia 3inica monographs. So fow Ishave to tell you the news tnat I am going out to China in about two months counted from now. My steamer will leave Gothenbur tbe 26tr of Septomber end arrive in Skanghai November 25th. I sm coming out probebly for the last time in my life to meet my remnining friends and to discuss with them topics of comron interest. I know that archaeological research has made very considereblé progr during the few lest years and I come to China this time much ss a student to lesrn from my collesgues and frimmds end their work. But one of the main objects of my visit to Okinre 18 to print out there 3 of our monographs. 1: J. 0. Andersson: The Prshistoric Sites of Northern Clina / the long delayed desoription of my maps/. : MM. Altbin: The Ch'i CEia P'ing Site. 3: 0. Jänse: Tho Isten Tisn Nortuary pottery /in Freneh/ I will write you in a couple of weoks a more detailed plan for. these 3 monogräpns outlining the number of pages and plates. I hope thet you will kindly accord me a place in the Geological Survey where to work with the proof-reading and the final editing of the msnuseripts. I will also be very glad to have the help of an artist for the execution of some drawings. Is my good frisnd Mr. Tung still switn youf Anbbher big interest during this visit to China 1s my intention to try to compile & geographical gext-book on the Far Zast. It goes without saying thet I sill be only too pleased to present to the Geological Survey suck geclogicel notes as I may be sbel to make end to hand to you suck specimens of rocks end fossils send eventual srckeeological specimens es I mey come across. On the other hend I will be extremely erateful for your kind belp in getting the Government permission to travel in these parts. You will certainly understend that my visits to the mentioned provin=- ees will n ssorily be rather rapid snd solely for the purpose of getting a porsonal ihpression of tbe general geography and the people. This time I have also the intention to deliver two series of lectures /provided tnat they mest with some interest/. As you see from the adjoined list one series is on the prebistory of China and the other on Sweden. I have thought that this being my last visit to Cnina, I would like to give to my second pat$ie Bs rapresentation of my first one. The terrible nows about Dr. Tingås much lamented death have filtered turough very slowly. One of bis brothers came here some weeks ego and gave the first full report.
