27 Walker St Cambridge 58 Mass US A November 26 1945 Dear Friend: I came back from a one month visit to London and found your voluminous resegmrches on my desk and that made me feel all the more keenly how I missed an opportunity to see you after I got so near and had to come away so soon. It wes the meeting of the United Nations Educational Conference that boought me to England as one of the Chinese delegates, Hu Shih being the other delegate going from this pert. Mr Elisséeff just showed me your letter sbout making use of recent resemgches in the dietionary project I have taken part in during recent times, That goes without saying and it will only be a questiong of the form in which it is to be car- ried out. After the preliminery mechanical prepearations, the dictionary project has been going on for over four years. Be- tween interruptions of army courses and other minor undertakings sueh as a Concise Dietionery of Spoken Chinese and a Centonese Primer, both just gone to press, I have done really very little for the dictionary. After outlining plans and making sampläs, it will be about time for me to cancel my leave from Academia Sinica since 1958 and return to Nanking, probably next autumn, It was a great shock to learn of the death of Professor Pelliot, Hu Shih and I heard about it in London. I had the good luck of heving a few meetings with him during his visit to America & few months ego and he was then in the best of spirits. The Institute of History and Pjilology is still in Lichuang, Szechuan and will probably move to Nanking next pear and transportation es soon communications are possible. mith sindest raserds
