O028, DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY PEKING UNION MEDICAL COLLEGE PEPING, CHINA. 25th February 1929, Professor J, G, Andersson, Ostasiatiska Samlikgarna, Sveavagen, 65, Stockholm, Sweden, Dear Dr, Andersson, & j Ny correspondence with you during the latter part of last year ; was confined to one or two hasty notes written while I was travelling, | Ås I have no copies of my letters I am not sure whether or not I sent | you any full statement of the steps the Foundation took with regard to our Central Asiatiec plan so I am sending you the following brief råésume for your files, I submitted your letter of July l4th last together with my de- tailed memorandum on change of plans to Dr, Pearce in New York just before I left for Peking last autumn, I pointed out that the second alternative plan you proposed was the one I should like to adopt were it possible to re&llocate the funds already voted for our original exnedition programme, Dr, Pearce pointed out it would be impossible to reallocate funds alresdy granted for a specifie purpose and said that the original grant woulé have to lapse as from December 31,1928, However, Dr, Pearce held out the hope that a new plan for anthropological research in Asia, including the i suggestions you offered in your letters of July 14 and 24, would be | considered were I able to draw up a detailed programme and buäåget in i consultation with Nr, Greene and Pr, Wong Wen Hao on my return to Peking, There the matter rested and Iwrote you from Vancouver last October saving ; that the Foundation's grant for our proposed cooperative research in — | Central Asia would lepse at the close of 1928 bringing to an enå the j agreerent drawn up in October 1926, Since my return to Peking I have been able to draw up a I detailed plan for human palaeontological research in Asia, which in AA | view of our continued success at Chou Kou Tien has met with the j enthusiastic supvort of Mr, Greene, Dr, Wong and Dr, Ting, Mr, Greene i ig now on his way to New York where early in March he expects to submit H my request for funds to support our new research programme, I am rather i optimistic over the prospect., The plan as I submitted it would make the research entirely under the auspices of the Geological Survey and I should become an honorary director of the Survey's Caenozoic Laboratory i nominally on the staff of the Survey, I plan further to take advantage | of your kind offer and ask you to colleborate with me in the fielå this i autumn and again in Central Asia in 1931, but these deteils I hope to
