This calligraphy consists of the characters "bul" and "sim" (佛心), which can be interpreted as Buddha's (佛) thought (心). They were written in ink on paper in the semi-cursive script. In the lower left of the calligraphy a verse of a prayer recited in the Buddhist Hyangsuhaerye ritual is written in the same calligraphic style (南無 千華上 百億界 釋迦海會 諸佛諸菩薩). Below, another ink inscription indicates that this work was created by Han Bong-deok (1924-1997) in Sweden in the early spring of the year 1974 (甲寅年初春於瑞典 老石韓奉德合掌). One rectangular relief seal below the first (upper) inscription reads "Noseok" (老石; the artist's sobriquet) written in seal script. To the right of the second inscription (below), there are five seals in seal script, aligned one on top of the other. The first from the top is an intaglio seal reading "seal of Han Bong-deok of Cheongju" (淸州韓奉德之印); the second seal contains the sobriquet of the artist "Noseok" (老石); the third seal is a rectangular relief seal (清老石奉?); and the fourth and fifth seal both read "seal of Han Bong-deok" (韓奉德印), but were written in different styles of seal script. This calligraphy is mounted as a hanging scroll.

Han Bong-deok (1924-1997) was born in Yeongbyeon, Pyeongan Province (present-day North Korea) and educated in Changchun (Sinje Art School) in today’s northern China during the Japanese occupation period (1910-1945). Han, who had worked as a middle school teacher for fine arts in his hometown Yeongbyeon, moved to South Korea during the Korean War (1950-1953). There he took up employment as a teacher and later worked for The Chosun Ilbo newspaper company as an illustrator while persistently developing his career as an artist. He initiated and organized an exhibition for contemporary artists (Hyeondae Jakga Chodaejeon) that was held several times from 1957, creating a platform for progressive artists like Kim Chang-ryeol and Pak seo-bo, and exhibiting several of his own abstract expressionist works. In 1972, he was invited to exhibit at a Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. After that, he remained in Sweden continuously producing artworks and exhibiting in solo shows not only in Sweden but also in Denmark. He also worked as a lecturer for East Asian studies at Stockholm University. After he spent more than a decade living in Sweden, he returned to South Korea. In the later years of his career, Han Bong-deok came to include themes such as romantic love, the beauty of nature and Buddhist faith in his art and put an emphasis on a symbolic way of depiction expressed through a calligraphic style of brushwork and a wide spectrum of vivid colours. The above-described calligraphy is a work of this later period of Han Bong-deok’s career.

부처의 마음을 뜻하는 "불심(佛心)"의 두 글자를 종이에 먹을 사용해 행서(行書)로 썼다. 글씨의 왼쪽 아래에 같은 서체로 적은 "나무 천화상 백억계 석가해회 제불제보살(南無 千華上 百億界 釋迦海會 諸佛諸菩薩)"은 불교 예경의식(禮敬儀式)의 하나인 향수해례(香水海禮)를 행하며 절을 할 때 읊는 의식문의 한 구절이다. 그 아래에 "갑인년초춘어서전 노석한봉덕합장(甲寅年初春於瑞典 老石韓奉德合掌)"의 또다른 묵서(墨書)는 노석 한봉덕(老石 韓奉德, 1924-1997)이 1974년 초봄에 스웨덴에서 이 글씨를 썼다는 기록이다.

첫 번째 묵서 아래에 찍힌 직사각형 주문방인(朱文方印)은 작가의 호(號)인 "노석(老石)"이 새겨져 있다. 두 번째 묵서 오른쪽에는 다섯 개의 도장이 일렬로 찍혀 있다. 첫 번째는 "청주한봉덕지인(淸州韓奉德之印)"이 새겨진 백문방인(白文方印), 두 번째는 "노석(老石)", 세 번째는 "청노석봉(清老石奉?)", 그리고 네 번째와 다섯 번째는 "한봉덕인(韓奉德印)"이라고 쓰인 도장이다. 모두 다른 자체(字體)로 새겨져 있다. 이 유물은 족자 형태로 장황이 되어 있다.

한봉덕은 오늘날의 북한에 위치한 평안북도 영변에서 태어나 일제강점기에 지금은 중국 북쪽에 속하는 장춘(長春)의 신제미술학교(新帝美術學校)에서 교육을 받았다. 그의 고향인 영변의 중학교에서 미술 교사로 재직하다가 한국전쟁 중 남한으로 넘어왔다. 남한에서도 교사로 일을 하다가 이후 조선일보 신문사에 삽화가로 근무하며 화가로서의 경력을 꾸준히 쌓았다. ‘현대작가초대전’을 기획하고 구성하여 1957년에 수회 주최하면서 김창렬, 박서보와 같은 진보적인 작가들을 소개하고 자신의 추상표현주의 계열의 작품 여러 점을 전시했다. 1972년 스웨덴 스톡홀름의 한 화랑의 초대를 받아 전시한 것을 계기로 스웨덴에 이주해 작품 활동을 계속 하며 스웨덴과 덴마크에서 개인전을 개최했다. 스톡홀름대학교의 동아시아학부의 강사를 맡기도 했다. 그는 스웨덴에 귀화하여 십 년이 넘는 기간을 거주하다가 다시 한국으로 귀국 및 정착했다. 한봉덕은 말년의 작품에서 남녀 간의 사랑, 자연의 아름다움, 불교 신앙과 같은 주제를 다루었고, 글씨를 쓰는 듯한 붓질과 강렬한 색채의 사용을 통한 상징적 묘사에 집중했다. 위의 글씨는 한봉덕의 후기 작품에 해당한다.
