This is not Bambara, though doubtless collected among them, but was made at Wagadugu in the Haute Volta, probably by Moshi (Mossi) craftsmen. The Mossi formerly did little or no brass-casting, but this style was invented late last century or early this century by a Gurunsi (or Grunshi) man who went to Wagadugu from the northern frontier of the Gold Coast. The industry was much encouraged by the French and these castings (nowadays done in white metal or aluminium mostly) are peddled all over West Africa by Hausa traders. (Some pieces are roughly signed, one in the B.M. being by one Joseph Baduit.) W.B.Fagg. 16.9.57.
