Triton

Pilaster föreställande långhårig och skäggig triton, iförd en volutprydd hjälm och brett nackskydd. Klädedräkten, möjligen rustningen, har fyrkantig urringning. Kring midjan ses ett ovalprytt band. Med vänster hand trycker tritonen en liten bukig sköld mot bröstet. Höger arm är placerad bakom ryggen, armen är endast rudimentärt utförd.

I det stora hela kan tritonen sägas vara framställd som friskulptur från låren och uppåt. Ryggen är dock något avplanad. Övergången till den fiskstjärtsformade nederdelen markeras av en stor, avrundad och bladliknande bildning varunder ses långsmala ovalformade blad.

Ett parti av höger sida av tritonens nederdel liksom motsvarande parti av skulpturens sockel (höger för betraktaren) är borthugget. Sockeln får härigenom ett kilformigt utseende. Den bladdekorerade sockeln är vriden ett kvarts varv i förhållande till skulpturen i övrigt så att dess front är riktad åt sidan.

Skulpturens baksida uppvisar mitt på en grupp små diffusa urtag med tydliga spår av arbete med stämjärn. Nedtill, ovanför sockeln, ses i höjd och upptill på sockeln ett mindre och relativt grunt urtag.

Skulpturen är välbevarad.

Text in English: Pilaster with long-haired, bearded Triton, wearing a volute-decorated helmet and long broad neck protector. Its tunic, possibly armour, has a square opening at the neck, around the waist there is an oval-decorated belt or strap. The Triton holds a small convex shield tightly against its chest in its left hand, the right arm is behind the back. The arm is carved only in a rudimentary manner.

The Triton is carved as a free sculpture from the hips up. The back is somewhat planed away. The transition between the upper body and the lower fish tail section is marked by a large round leafy formation under which there is a long, narrow, oval-shaped leaf.

A section of the right side of the Triton''s lower body and the corresponding section of the base of the sculpture (the right side from the observer''s point of view) has been cut off, the base thus has a wedge-shaped appearance. The leaf-decorated base is twisted at about a quarter of a circle in relation to the rest of the sculpture. The front of the base faces to the side rather than to the front.

The rear side of the sculpture displays a cluster of small grooves showing clearly that a marking-iron has been used in the work. Below this, above the base at the level of these incisions, there is a large groove of varying width and at the upper end of the base there is a smaller, relatively shallow groove.

The sculpture is well preserved.
